Summary
Well what can I say except that it is surprisingly one of better second sequels of a film series out there and one of the most rarest decent second sequels to compare to the originals. The film contained very beautiful animation, lovely new characters, more character and story-arc development. There was also a lot of fun and exciting scenes all the way from start to end and a worthy conclusion to the first half of a film series.
What's it about?
Po's long lost father finds his son at Mr Ping's noodle shop and takes him to his secret panda village where the whole tribe have been hiding from the villainous Lord Shen and are now ready to see their long lost heir again. In the meantime a new villain named Kai has returned from the spirit realm after defeating Master Oogway and now wants to capture all other kung fu masters to prove himself the most powerful kung fu master of all time. Now it's up to Po to stop him but he needs help from his long lost tribe before he can battle the evil Kai.
The good bits
The film had excellent character development and story building, it had very beautiful animation, it featured more world building, and likeable new characters. There was a lot of fun and exciting scenes from start to end, good jokes, great writing and fast pacing. It made me want three more sequels for the Kung Fu Panda film series. Overall it is a type of sequel that is just as good as the first of the series.
The bad bits
To be fair although I found the new villain decent, I still didn't think he was as good, well-developed or as powerful as the villain from Kung Fu Panda 2. There were some jokes I didn't think worked very well, and I personally thought that the film didn't quite retain as much character development or world building as much as the last sequel. Also I liked Kung Fu Panda 2 slightly better for being more serious than Kung Fu Panda 3 and for retaining more drama and dark scenes and themes than this movie, all of which made Kung Fu Panda 2 all the more the most powerful and strongest of the Kung Fu Panda series.
What is it similar to?
It is one of the most rare second sequels of a film series that doesn't make the series go downhill and stay as good quality as much as the originals, like Toy story 3 and unlike Shrek the third, Cars 2 and Ice age 2 and 3. It is superior to another decent animated flick staring anthropomorphic animals of the same year called "Sing", yet inferior to another similar movie also from the same year called "Zootropolis" which is by far my favourite movie of the year 2016.
Oscar's recommendation
I would recommend all Kung Fu Panda fans everywhere to Watch Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2, Secrets Of The Furious Five, Kung Fu Panda Holiday, Secrets Of The Masters and Secrets Of The Scroll first before watching this sequel and then watch a new short movie called "Panda Paws". Just like the original, you must be prepared for mild violence and martial arts fighting, peril and threat.
Parent/carer alerts
Swearing
There was no swearing in this movie.
Violence
Just like the first two movies, there was a lot of mild violence, both comedic and serious. There was a lot of martial arts fighting and threat and the villain gets blown up by the end of the movie.
Fear
The new villain can be quite intense to some viewers especially when he enslaves kung fu warriors to be his henchmen. Some people might worry about Kai trying to hurt the panda cubs and defeat Po.
Autism alerts
Sensory details
You must be prepared for a lot of martial arts fighting, Kai being a pretty intense villain even for a family movie, and mild violence which is both played humorously and seriously.
